The Importance of Carbohydrates in Our Diet

We are happy to see America becoming healthy again! Our patients are losing weight, exercising, and eating healthier! It is inspiring to see the success our patients are experiencing by exceeding their healthy lifestyle goals.

As a reminder, our bodies require all nutrients – vitamins, minerals, proteins, fats and carbohydrates to function. With all the information available online and the recommendations of multiple diets available currently, it is confusing for all of us to understand what defines a healthy diet.

I’ve practiced medicine for 15 years and have always recommended a healthy diet and adequate exercise to my patients. I find my patients who have healthier lifestyles and choose natural treatments in general are less likely to have high blood pressure, diabetes, elevated cholesterol and other health risks associated with unhealthy lifestyle choices.

I wanted to take the time to remind people that carbohydrates are necessary for our bodies, especially our brains. The American diet consists of consuming too many carbohydrates. The recommended minimum grams of carbohydrates is 130 grams daily to meet the body’s energy needs.

Our brains run on glucose, even when we are sleeping. Not only does glucose fuel the brain, but it is also important for communication between neurons in the brain. If the brain does not have enough glucose, people may show signs of cognitive deficits. In addition, glucose is important for creating and maintaining memories, along with learning new things. If our brains do not have enough glucose to function, people may experience signs of hypoglycemia including decreased concentration, confusion and dizziness.

Healthy carbohydrate options include fruits, vegetables, and complex carbohydrates from whole grains and beans.

The key to health is balance. While too many carbohydrates are not healthy, not fueling the brain with enough glucose daily also leads to complications. If you consume a 2000 calorie diet, that is between 225-325 healthy carbohydrates daily, with a minimum recommendation of 130 mg of healthy carbohydrates daily to maintain a healthy brain function.
