Suicide warning signs can vary from person to person, but some common indicators include:

  • Talking about suicide: Expressions of wanting to die, be dead, or about suicide
  • Changes in behavior: Sudden or drastic changes in behavior, such as:
    • Withdrawal from social interactions or activities
    • Increased isolation
    • Sudden calmness or happiness after a period of depression
  • Emotional distress: Intense emotional pain, hopelessness, or despair
  • Risky behaviors: Engaging in self-destructive behaviors, such as:
    • Substance abuse or addiction
    • Self-harm or cutting
    • Suicidal ideation or planning
  • Loss or trauma: Recent experiences of loss, trauma, or significant change, such as:
    • Job loss or financial difficulties
    • Relationship problems or breakup
    • Serious illness or chronic pain
  • Mental health conditions: A history of mental health disorders, particularly:
    • Depression
    • Bipolar disorder
    • Schizophrenia
    • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
