Question: My daughter just joined skiing and is a teen with teen skin, but it’s so dry in winter and in that wind. What’s the best way to combat the effects on the parts of her face sticking out without making her into a greasy acne face?

This is a great question and often a problem we see in the clinic this time of year! Avoid hot water and soap, try switching to a moisturizing body wash instead of bar soap for your body. Use a humidifier indoors to restore moisture in the air that can be lost with running our heaters. Moisturize twice a day, especially after showering. Look for moisturizers with humectants like hyaluronic acid and glycerin. Another thing: be gentle on your skin! After showering and washing, be sure to pat your skin dry, don’t rub it.
When looking for moisturizers for acne prone skin, you want to avoid ingredients like heavy oils, waxes, and parabens because they can clog pores and worsen breakouts. Instead look for non-comedogenic options. They are listed below to help the next time you are at the store! Biggest thing don’t fall for the marketing labels and read the ingredients on the back.
Ingredients to avoid: coconut oil, almond oil, wheat germ oil, and other heavy oils that can easily clog pores, beeswax, lanolin, stearic acid, added scents, artificial colors, methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, isopropyl palmitate.
Ingredients to look for: salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, and glycerin.
