How to Stay Healthy During Sick Season

As we are officially in the midst of sick season and shortened daylight, I would like to discuss how to help keep your immune system strong during this time to prevent illness and seasonal affective disorder.

Your immune system is how your body defends itself from threats from the outside world. When your immune system is strong, your body is better prepared to fight off sickness quicker.

The best way to get your key vitamins is from whole food, but you can also take supplements to boost those levels. Foods that are high in vitamin C: citrus fruits such as lemons, grapefruits and oranges, strawberries, broccoli, kale, bell peppers. Foods that are high in Vitamin D: fish and dairy products. Foods high in zinc: red meat, seafood, nuts, beans. Foods with probiotics: yogurt, kombucha, sauerkraut. Other core foods to consume: spices, such as turmeric, ginger, and garlic; bone broth.

When looking for supplements over the counter it can be overwhelming as there is an endless amount of different brands. If you are local, I would recommend going to Life Preserver in Baxter, as they are very knowledgeable about the highest quality supplements.

Other things you can do is get enough sleep: 7-9 hours, 20-30 minutes of movement daily, fresh air and sunlight, stay hydrated: drink half your body weight in ounces, eat well balanced whole foods, don’t smoke, limit alcohol consumption, manage stress through self-care, and of course, wash your hands often.

If you find yourself battling an illness, remember that we do have IV Immune Boost infusion and Vitamin D injections to help you as well. Stay healthy!
