Are IV Services Covered by Health Insurance?

Patients often ask us if our IV Infusions services are covered by health insurance. In general, the answer to this question unfortunately is “No.”

We may bill an IV infusion of Normal Saline to health insurance, however that does not ensure the service is covered. For us to bill a patient’s health insurance for an IV Infusion of Normal Saline, a patient needs to be evaluated in clinic by a provider for an office visit to determine if the IV infusion is medically necessary.

We may add medications, such as Zofran for nausea or Toradol for pain, to the IV to treat various illnesses. The amount billed to health insurance ranges from $486.00-$688.00, or more, depending on medications administered and the length of the IV infusion service.

Depending on the patient’s deductible for health insurance, they may be responsible for a portion or all the bill. More importantly, patients are responsible for the payment if health insurance does not deem the services medically necessary.
